Why this matters now

What the rules require

If you prepare returns for pay, the rules already apply to you. Three places spell it out:

IRS Publication 4557

The IRS’s Safeguarding Taxpayer Data guide says it plainly: “Protecting taxpayer data is the law.”

Source: IRS Pub. 4557

FTC Safeguards Rule

Under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, the FTC treats tax and accounting firms as “financial institutions.” A written security program is required.

Source: FTC Safeguards Rule, 16 CFR 314

Your PTIN Renewal

At renewal, Form W-12 asks you to confirm you keep a written security plan.

Source: IRS Form W-12, Line 11

This applies to every paid preparer, and the responsibility sits with your firm.

What’s at stake

What’s really on the line for your firm

Without a plan in place, a few things you care about are exposed:

Your ability to e-file

A breach with no plan can put your IRS e-File privileges, and your busy season, at risk.

FTC enforcement & penalties

The Safeguards Rule is federal law. Non-compliance invites FTC investigation and penalties.

Your clients’ trust

A breach means notifying every client, and many won’t come back.

Your PTIN attestation

You confirm you have a WISP at every renewal. We make sure that’s true.

The complete package

Everything you need, in one package

The Safeguards Rule wants real protection running, not just a document on file. We handle the plan and the technology that makes it real, so you’re genuinely covered.

  • Your WISP, written & signed with you. Built around how your firm actually works, and signed off together.
  • Full managed IT & cybersecurity stack. Encryption, MFA, endpoint protection, patching, backups, and monitoring.
  • Business voice / phone included. VoIP phone built in, so it’s one provider for everything.
  • 1-2 months of guided onboarding. We assess, remediate, document, and train your team.
  • Risk assessment & policies. Access controls, incident-response plan, and vendor oversight.
  • Ongoing protection & support. A dedicated team keeping you secure and audit-ready year-round.

Common WISP questions

What tax professionals ask us

What is a WISP, and do I really need one?
A WISP (Written Information Security Plan) is a documented plan for how your firm protects taxpayer data. Yes, you need one. Under the FTC Safeguards Rule, every paid tax preparer is required to keep one, and IRS Publication 4557 confirms that protecting taxpayer data is the law.
How does a WISP connect to my PTIN renewal?
When you renew, Form W-12 (Line 11) asks you to confirm you keep a written information security plan. With a real WISP in place, you can check that box honestly and renew with confidence.
Isn’t a downloadable WISP template enough?
A template is a fine starting point, but the Safeguards Rule expects the protections to actually be running: encryption, multi-factor authentication, access controls, monitoring, and a designated security lead. We write a plan for your firm and put the matching technology in place, so your documentation matches reality.
What happens if I don’t have one?
Non-compliance with the FTC Safeguards Rule can lead to an FTC investigation and penalties, and a data breach without a plan can mean lost clients, lost revenue, and reputational damage. The IRS can also affect your ability to e-file. A WISP is both a legal requirement and basic protection for your business.
How long does it take to get compliant?
Most firms are up and running within our 1-2 month onboarding window. We assess, write your WISP, deploy the security stack and phone system, train your team, and hand over audit-ready documentation.
What does it cost?
The complete package covers your WISP, the full managed IT and cybersecurity stack, and business voice, for $300 per workstation per month, all-in, with 1-2 months of onboarding included. No hidden fees or setup charges. Request your plan below for your exact number based on firm size.
